Linton-Venus Connection

The Linton pencil company went out of business in the early sixties or so, and I’m not aware of the continuation of any of its brands.  Except this:

Art-Guild was one of Linton’s main brands.  I was surprised to see it made by Venus.

Very interesting, I did search and find that “art-guild” rights were from American Pencil Co., later It changed name to Venus Pen & Pencil Corp., next were sold to Faber-Castell Corp. which later in 1994 was bought by Newell Corporation and in 1996 Newell sold the US rights of Faber-Castell name to original German founders but no its related brands as “art-guild”, so today It´s owned by Newell-Rubbermaid.

    • So, it may be that American had the original rights to Art-Guild, but never produced that brand, licensing it to Linton instead. Then when Linton closed shop, Venus briefly made the pencil.

Is it true that Mr. Linton was from the Eastern part of NC and went to PA to make the Linton Pencil? I would love to be able to tell my son and daughter that it is true. My former husband was a Linton who was a decendent of John W. Linton (a traveling minister) whose brother went to PA to make the Pencil.

      • Some older Linton pencils indicate that the company was based in Lewisburg, Tennessee. I don’t have any information about a Pennsylvania connection. Does anyone?

  2. You are correct, the company was based in Lewisburg, TN. It was founded in November 1939 by Samuel E. Linton Jr, my husband’s grandfather. To my knowledge there are no direct descendents in PA.
